RockChain - Transversal technological skills for the ornamental rock industry focusing on the applicability of Blockchain in a Circular Economy
Digital technologies will be the fundamental basis for economic and social development in the 21st century. That is why we must take full advantage of the potential that these new technologies offer for the benefit of a more sustainable economy, both for society and for the environment.
The RockChain project was born under this concept: to create a basic training base for vocational training students, technicians and professionals in the stone and construction sector and waste managers, in which the potential use of combining a novel technology such as Blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data in the management of waste from the stone industry is promoted.
In the EU, construction and demolition waste (CDW) accounts for approximately one third of all waste generated. This problem is aggravated when the treatment and management of this waste is not done properly, making it impossible for a large amount of it to be reintroduced into the value chain. Proper management of CDW and recycled materials, including correct handling of waste, can bring major benefits in terms of sustainability and quality of life. It can also bring major economic benefits to the EU construction and recycling industry by increasing the demand for recycled materials.
It is under this background that the concept of the circular economy and waste management appears as an important avenue of opportunity to change the model of production and consumption that has been in place since the previous industrial revolution.
This is where Blockchain technology will play an important role. The Blockchain technology was born to support and make work an electronic payment system, but nowadays, any sector can find advantages if it applies this technology properly, such as the insurance sector, health, transport and logistics, industry (waste management, product quality, process verification, etc.) and many others, because it can help them to improve the management of the company, and also to discover and exploit new business models.
Objectives:
- educate about Blockchaintechnology and begin to raise interest in it among students and professionals;
- provide technicians and workers in the stone sector tools for the management of waste derived from the industry, in order to determine its traceability for greater control of its management and value enhancement;
- encourage professionals and students to become entrepreneurs in the field of waste management and Blockchain technology, showing the potential that blockchain has in this aspect;
- make students and professionals in the stone and construction sector aware of the importance of construction waste management and its reintroduction into the value chain, in the search for meeting the Sustainable Developmentobjectives that the European Union has set as a goal;
- promote the development of a transparent, decentralized system of documentation follow-up, which covers from the beginning to the end of the waste management process, in order to store the information on the types of waste generated and to inventory them, in order to facilitate the process of reinsertion of these wastes into the value chain.
